Galway City Council has recently published the Draft Local Area Plan (LAP) for lands situated in the area known as Ardaun on the east side of the city.
The publication of the Draft Ardaun LAP fulfils a longstanding objective of Galway City Council to provide a statutory planning policy framework for the sustainable development of this key development area. Ardaun than can accommodate long term growth in population, economic activity and employment opportunities for Galway City. Successive City Development Plans since 2005 have recognised that in order to create a sustainable environment at Ardaun and to establish a phased development framework, these lands should be subject to an LAP.
The Draft Ardaun LAP has been prefaced by a number of preliminary studies including the Ardaun Urban Design Advices 2012, Street Conversations 2013, the Ardaun Urban Design Charette 2013, the Ardaun Urban Design Strategy 2014 and the Ardaun Village Centre Design Study 2015, as well as a programme of public and stakeholder consultations, workshops and public information sessions.
The Draft Ardaun LAP sets out a framework for the development of a high quality living and working neighbourhood based on urban design principles and includes for integration with a sustainable transportation network.
Ardaun is currently a bank of greenfield lands, comprising approximately 164 hectares, and occupies a strategic location at a gateway point into Galway City from the east and is located approximately 5km from the city centre. Ardaun is recognised within the current Galway City Development Plan as a key opportunity site to accommodate a significant amount of the anticipated expansion of the city and population growth. In this regard, the City Development Plan has anticipated that housing developments in Ardaun will be delivered during the plan period that will contribute to meeting the needs of the population targets. The Housing Strategy of City Development Plan has anticipated the delivery of 1,098 housing units during the City Development Plan period.
