Survey and assessment of vegetated shingle and associated habitats in Ireland

A new Irish Wildlife Manual for the survey and assessment of vegetated shingle and associated habitats has been published.

The manual primarily relates to the Annex I habitat vegetated shingle [1220] (i.e. Perennial vegetation of stony banks) but also includes Annex I sand dune habitats 1210, 2110, 2120, 2130, 2170, 2190, 21A0.

Data from a Vegetated Shingle Monitoring (VSM) programme were used to produce a list of typical and characteristic species for four of the six vegetation communities recorded within the 1220 Vegetated shingle habitat.

The new manual provides a new definition of the 1220 habitat type in Ireland which supersedes the definition provided in the article 17 reports. It also provides structure and function assessment criteria for 1220 habitat and the previously listed Annex I sand dune habitats.

The new manual can be downloaded at: https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/publications/pdf/IWM98.pdf
