The 2017 Energy in Agriculture event was held in Gurteen College, Roscrea on Tuesday last 2nd August, and MKO staff were in attendance. The event was very well attended with approximately 2,500 visiting over the course of the day.
One of the main interests for MKO on the day was the address of Denis Naughton, Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment. It was highly speculated in advance that the Minister would make an announcement regarding Government support for ground mounted solar developments. However, no such announcement was made by the Minister, who instead focussed his address on the renewable heat incentive and biomass.
In a Q&A the Minister accepted that there was a significant delay on the announcement and confirmed that a consultation on the support scheme for renewables would open in the coming weeks. This scheme will set the price paid to solar developers selling electricity to the national grid. The industry continues to await this announcement with interest. Despite the lack of clarity regarding Government support, it was very clear that a strong appetite remains to deliver solar farms in the Republic of Ireland.
