McCarthy Keville O’Sullivan (MKO) is seeking to recruit a Senior Research Ornithologist to join its Ornithology Team.
MKO is a specialist environmental and planning consultancy, based in Galway City. The company employs over 50 people across its five internal teams, which offer services in the fields of Ornithology, Ecology, Environmental, Planning and Estates & Project Management.
MKO has successfully completed a number of ornithology research projects in the recent past, and want to place a particular focus on this type of applied research in the future by creating a dedicated role for a Senior Research Ornithologist. MKO’s Ornithology Team is the largest private-sector consultancy team dedicated to providing ornithology services in Ireland, and the dedicated role of Senior Research Ornithologist is also intended to further strengthen our company’s capability, capacity and reputation in the field of ornithology.
As a Senior Research Ornithologist, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing existing and identifying new applied research ornithology opportunities across a range of sectors. You will respond to requests for tenders for research ornithology projects from the public and semi-state sector. You will also identify applied research ornithology opportunities across the private sector and within specific industry sectors.
As the Senior Research Ornithologist, you will engage with stakeholders across Government, academia, NGO and voluntary groups to successfully deliver the research projects already being undertaken, and develop new research opportunities for the future. Knowledge of the key personnel in these spaces and research projects already underway, would be important prerequisites for prospective candidates.
The ideal candidate would have experience of conducting scientific applied research projects in the field of ornithology, and be enthusiastic about furthering scientific research in new areas. The successful candidate would also need proven experience and capability of preparing successful funding proposals and managing research projects from inception to completion. Strong managerial, organisational, budgeting/financial and scientific reporting skills, are essential requirements.
Competencies and Experience

- A third-level qualification in ecology, ornithology or natural sciences, and further fourth-level specialisation in ornithology, preferable applied research ornithology.
- Strong commercial awareness, ideally with some experience of the consultancy sector.
- Highly motivated, self-starter who thrives in a busy, dynamic office setting.
- Strong analytical mind-set.
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrable experience of securing funding for and delivering on research projects, ideally in the ornithology field.
- A full driving licence.
